The cover of a book or magazine is often the first thing that attracts you to it. In s crowded dealer's room, the cover of a fanzine needs to send an immediate message of the contents and focus of a zine. That instantaneous transfer of information can mean the difference in whether you give the zine a second look or not. Over the years since my first zine in 1977, I've published a lot of different artists on the cover, including myself. Flipping through the covers today, I'm still happy with the choices. While zines today are beautifully packaged with full color covers featuring computer-manipulated images and blends from photographs of the characters and shows, I still prefer the pen and ink, and sometimes pencil, approach. As an artist, I find drawing with instrument and paper more satisfying. And on the physical zine, the selection of the card stock was often an important component to the presentation of the art.
